Slate of events Accompanies Exhibit at University of San Francisco- April, 2022

Unversity of San Francisco

Throughout the month of April, the Waging Peace in Vietnam exhibit’s showing at the University of San Francisco was supplemented by a full range of supporting events including a webinar, an opening session and tour, a music performance, a film screening, course livestreams, and a closing event featuring remarks on a recent book release. All together, it made for an exciting collaboration to highlight the resistance movement by soldiers to end the War in Vietnam made possible by the USF Institute for Nonviolence and Social Justice and the Peace and Justice Studies Program, in partnership with a number of USF academic departments and centers.

To kick things off, a webinar was hosted to discuss reflections on the 65th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “Beyond Vietnam” speech featuring
Santa Clara University Professors Aldo Billingslea and Margaret Russell and Clarence B. Jones, Dr. King's lawyer, strategic, advisor and draft speechwriter.

The next day, curator of the Waging Peace in Vietnam exhibit and peace and social justice activist, Ron Carver, led an opening session and tour of the exhibit. And, a few days later, a string quartet premiered a special music performance inspired by My Lai.

A film screening of The Boys Who Said No included a panel discussion with USF Professor Vijaya Nagarajan, the film’s acclaimed director Judith Ehrlich, renowned Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg, and leading anti-war activists Mandy Carter, David Harris, and Lee Swenson.

A series of livestreams enabled the community to join programming in Professor Jennifer Turpin's Violence in Society Course which featured distinguished guests discussing their experiences with the War in Vietnam.

In closing, an event was held to hear reamarks from Craig McNamara, author of the recently released book Because Our Fathers Lied: A Memoir of Truth and Family, from Vietnam to Today.
